Specify how you allow others to use your work with licenses
Licensing your work allows others to use your work, typically for a fee, and only as you specify. Unlike assigning your copyright to someone else, licensing gives you flexibility and allows you to use your creative work to make money.
If you’ve got a great song that you’ve written and recorded, you can license your music to someone making a film for use in the soundtrack. Within your license agreement, you can specify exactly how your song may be used, ensuring that the licensee won’t infringe upon your copyright. You could, for example, stipulate that they may use the song in the film, but not in the promotion of the film or on the film’s website. Licensing leaves these decisions up to you.
Another common example of licensing at work is software. If you’ve written a great software program for businesses, a license agreement allows you to sell that software to a business and specify how they may use it. It is this license agreement that sets limits on the number of users, or on how the business may use the software.
And, unlike a Creative Commons license, custom, use-specific license agreements can be set for a specific amount of time. You could license your photography to a designer to use for just one year, for example.
