HOW CAN MY BAND OR MUSIC GROUP COPYRIGHT
OUR SONGS AND SAVE MONEY?

If you have a garage band or music group and want to protect your songs, Click&Copyright can help and save you tons of money in the process.

If your garage band / music group wants to copyright its recorded songs and wants to do so with just one copyright application (which will save you a lot of money), you can only do it if:

  • all the garage band’s /music group’s recorded music / songs are on one CD (if the songs on the CD are published, the publication would have to have been at the same time—e.g. all songs released for the first time on a new album) and have one collective title (album name); and

  • all the people in the garage band / music group who are claiming ownership of each song and the collection as a whole are the same (in the case where one member of the band is claiming ownership, then you would probably need some work for hire agreements from the other members of the garage band / music group who authored and /or performed the songs); and

  • at least one member of the garage band / music group has contributed to the authorship of all the songs being copyrighted. If your garage band / music group wants to only register the song lyrics or written music and not the performance of the songs, click here to learn how you can register just song lyrics and written music with one copyright application.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY BAND COPYRIGHTS ALL OUR SONGS TOGETHER, BUT WE BREAK UP?

If your garage band / music group copyrights all your songs under one application and does nothing else, every person listed as one of the copyright claimants (owners of the songs) can use the songs however he/she wishes.

So, you wanted to save money up front by copyrighting all your songs with just one application, but now your once promising garage band has broken up and you don’t want your one time best friend / bass player to have the rights to a song that he didn’t even write. What the hell do you do?

If your garage band / music group wants to file all your songs under one application, but doesn’t want everyone to be able to have equal use of the material upon break up, you should execute a copyright assignment form.

Click&Copyright has drafted this agreement specifically for garage bands and musical groups. The Copyright Assignment Agreement spells out who can use what songs, who owns what songs, etc. in the event of a band break up. You can tailor this to fit your own needs and requirements or hire a lawyer to do it for you.. The copyright assignment agreement can be filed with the US Copyright Office or just kept with your own records.

Order our Garage Band / Music Group Copyright Assignment Form now for just $17 or pay just $10 if you purchase it with either of our copyright registration packages.

I AM THE CREATOR OF MY BAND AND THE OTHER MEMBERS JUST PERFORMED THE MUSIC I OWN. DO I STILL OWN IT ALL?

If you’re copyrighting the performance of several songs by a garage band or music group under one application, the performers (authors) could make a claim for ownership in the works (at least the performance thereof) even if you own the copyright to the written material.

Because the performers are authors under US Copyright law, they should be listed as authors on the application. However, you do have the option of noting if their authorship was on a work-made-for-hire basis, meaning that they were paid for their contribution in exchange for any rights in the work that they may have had.

We have created a work-made-for-hire agreement just for garage bands and music groups. Click here to learn more about our work-made-for-hire agreement. At just $17, it’s a great value as you can use it over and over. If you have 20 musicians performing on your CD, all of them can sign the same agreement (you’ll just need to change the names), but you only need to pay for it once! The Garage Band / Music Group Work-Made-For-Hire agreement is just $10 when you order either of our copyright registration packages.
